Further Information

Among the phospholipids, the most important product is phosphatidylcholine. Two fatty acids bound in position 1 and 2 of the glycerol form the lipophilic part of the molecule. The polar header category group is built by phosphocholine esterified in position 3 to the glycerol backbone.

In the natural composition of saturated and unsaturated fats, fatty acids are typical for the raw material source (egg, soybean, rapeseed (canola) or sunflower). Hydrogenated phospholipids consist of saturated fatty acids.

Only highly pure fatty acids of designated chain-length and saturation are present in synthetic phosphatidylcholine.
Phosphatidylcholine is a zwitter-ionic molecule without net charge. Due to its unique structure it works as a multifunctional constituent of pharmaceutical, cosmetic or dietetic formulations.
